Solutions to Common Questions and Problems in CBT, Simulator, and TestMaster

General

1. I can’t read the Readme file.

The Readme file contains a user guide for the product in Word 6.0/95
format. You can use Microsoft Word or WordPad to open the Readme
file.

LearnByDoing™ Simulator

1. Some keys do not work.

While running LearnByDoing Windows NT, if your system is not
accepting keys such as <Enter>, <Esc>, <Ins>, <Del>, or <Spacebar>,
please make sure to check the following:

1. Your Caps Lock is turned off.
2. You are not using any keys on the Numeric Pad of the keyboard.

Note: If you should encounter a problem with the <Enter>, <Esc>,
<Ins>, <Del>, or <Spacebar> keys, set Caps Lock to ON and repeat. If
the problem persists, use the exercises only in demo mode by clicking
on the right or left arrow keys.

2. The Voice and Music feature in LearnByDoing Windows NT does
not work.

The Voice and Music feature in LearnByDoing Windows NT is not
available in this version of MCSE CBT.

3. LearnByDoing Windows NT does not run or runs very slowly.

LearnByDoing Windows NT uses memory and system resources due to
the video and multimedia features. It runs best on systems with 8 MB
or more of memory. Tutorials will run with adequate speed on a PC with
only 4 MB of memory if the PC does not have any other applications
running in addition to LearnByDoing Windows NT.

4. A "missing video driver or not enough memory" error message
appears when running MCSE CBT/LearnByDoing Simulator on
Windows 95 or 98.

1) Try closing other open programs to see if the memory this frees up
will allow MCSE CBT to run.
2) Defragment your hard drives.
3) Increase the size of virtual memory.
4) Make sure the Multimedia accessories are installed on your system; if
the Multimedia accessories are not present, install them. Then, try to
run any AVI file and see if it works. You may find AVI files on
CBT/LearnByDoing CD.
5) If you can run AVI files but LearnByDoing is still not working, you are
probably using a third-party multimedia software as the default media
driver. Uninstall it and use Windows default multimedia player, and then
run LearnByDoing again.
6) MCSE CBT/LearnByDoing should run now. If you still receive this error
message, your operating system may have an internal problem. Contact
your PC supplier or manufacturer for help.

5. Some exercises in LearnByDoing Windows NT Workstation 4.0
show screens from Windows NT Server 4.0.

Some exercises are identical in Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and
Windows NT Server 4.0. Even though these exercises were created on
a Windows NT Server, they also apply to Windows NT Workstation.

CBT

1. Other users can view and modify my notes and bookmarks.

MCSE CBT Book creates notes and bookmarks on the local hard disk.
These are shared among all users on this computer. To create a
separate set of notes and bookmarks, install MCSE CBT on another
computer.

2. The image quality is very poor.

To get the best playback image, set your Display to Super VGA
640x480, 256 colors. The demo will also run satisfactorily in higher
resolutions and other color palettes (e.g., 16 colors or 64K colors).

3. A "missing driver or not enough memory" error message
appears when running MCSE CBT on Windows 3.x.

To solve this problem, simply double-click on the icon "Install Video
Driver". This will install the missing driver.

If you see the error message in Windows 95/98, refer to question 4 in
the "LearnByDoing Simulator" section.

4. The screen is scrambled when running MCSE CBT.

We have included Microsoft's latest Video-For-Windows Run-Time
multimedia drivers. These are installed on your system during setup.
Microsoft has informed us that for some older PCs, the PC video card
drivers may need to be updated in order to run with Microsoft's new
multi-media drivers. The PCs this affects are:

PCs using Cirrus Logic chips in the video board

Certain COMPAQ PCs including the older Pro-Linea PCs.

PCs using Matrox Millennium Cards as video adapters.

If you get a "scrambled" screen when running a demo or lesson, get a
new video driver from your PC supplier or manufacturer. On
CompuServe, the latest Cirrus Logic video drivers are in the IBM
Hardware area (GO IBMHW).

You can also try changing your display setting in the Windows Setup to
the generic VGA driver that comes with Windows.

TestMaster™

1. Can we print out more than one question at one time?

For now TestMaster does not support printing multiple questions.

2. In TestMaster, sometimes when I print a question and
explanation, the text is missing or overlapping.

TestMaster software was originally designed to print on a single page,
and the explanation section starts at a fixed line on the report. A
question which is too long overlaps part of the explanation. Also, the
question or explanation which is too long to fit on one page is cut off.
This bug will be fixed in a future version of TestMaster. Until then,
please continue to display the long questions and explanations on
screen.

3. In MCSE TestMaster version 1.5, when I use Alt-P, I always get
the Explain screen. How can I print using an Alt key, since Print
also uses Alt-P?

The reason is that the "Previous" and "Explain" buttons have incorrectly
been assigned the same short-cut key "P". This bug has been fixed in
MCSE TestMaster version 1.6.

4. When I run TestMaster, I got this error message:

Exception EReadError in
module MCSE_TM.EXE at 000F:2A32
Error reading QuickReport1.PaperLength: Printer driver error

To solve this problem, a printer driver must be installed on the your
system, even though there is no any printer physically connected to
the computer. You can use any printer driver for this purpose.

5. When I run TestMaster, some questions are not completed and
cut off.

This often happens when the large font size is being used on the
system. Go to "Control Panel > Display > Settings" to change size of
font to small and the problem will be solved.

This problem is also found with using the Japanese version windows.
The only way to overcome the problem is to use the English version
windows.
