HM Government Budget 2016 commits to development of Building Information Modelling Level 3

In the recent budget the Government announced that it will continue into the next phase of digital standards in construction with the development of Building Information Modelling 3 as described in Digital Built Britain. The next exciting step will see benefits of the Digital Built approach extend to savings for asset owners.

The Government will develop the next digital standard for the construction sector – Building Information Modelling 3 – to save owners of built assets billions of pounds a year in unnecessary costs, and maintain the UK’s global leadership in digital construction

This commitment will see a renewed opportunity to challenge the existing models and invest in our industry’s digital future.

As outlined in the Digital Built Britain Level 3 Strategy, some of the opportunities include:

  • The creation of a set of new international ‘open data’ standards which would pave the way for easy sharing of data across the entire market.
  • The establishment of a new contractual framework for projects which have been procured with BIM, to ensure consistency, avoid confusion and encourage open, collaborative working.
  • The creation of a cultural environment which is co-operative, seeks to learn and share.
  • Training the public sector client in the use of BIM techniques such as data requirements, operational methods and contractual processes.
  • Driving domestic and international growth and jobs in technology and construction.

At PCSG we are enthusiastic to see the Government making this bold commitment. This support continues the UK’s important leadership role in digital construction and we will be keen to engage with the Government, the BIM Task Group and industry on the exciting next stage of Digital Built Britain.
