Gaist, which PCSG supports with corporate communications, is providing a technological boost for winter resilience in Cumbria with BridgeCat, the award-winning mobile bridge inspection system.

The system, funded by the Department for Transport and developed by Gaist with Cumbria County Council, is poised for deployment in a flood situation.

BridgeCat uses sonar, an underwater camera and sensors, to measure the damage caused by floodwater.

The system, which has undergone trials for the past year, will be used to improve resilience at key flooding hotspots, enabling communities affected by floods to be reconnected more rapidly.

Nearly 800 bridges in Cumbria were affected by the 2015/6 winter storms. Previously divers were sent to assess damage once floodwaters receded but they can only visit a small number each day.

Last year, Gaist and the project team received the New Civil Engineer Tech Fest, Judge’s Supreme Award for BridgeCat.
